3 characteristics to melodic themes
1 rythm
2 melodic shape to the notes
3 suggested harmony

 
repeat the theme to establish it for the listener 8-16 bars

types of theme variations

reversing the theme
changing the inversions
displacing the timing
varying the rhythm
adding embellishments
extending the line
remember to pause during your playing just like you do when speaking
just like sentences melodic phrases vary in length
as do the spaces between phrases
improviser job show the listener the compositional elements as well as the mood of a song

song analysis

brake the song into sections

determine chord scales for each section

note major\minor shifts, rhythmic variations, key modulation
