The Friendship Group The Friendship Group is a free, social, recreational and learning group for Pittsburgh area. blind and visually impaired seniors and adults. Its mission is to provide members with the opportunity to increase social interaction, to become more fully involved in life, to enhance self-esteem, to partake in useful activities, to meet others with similar obstacles, and to develop a more hopeful, positive outlook on life in spite of diminished vision.

The Friendship Group offers these activites

  • Monthly Meetings with professional entertainment, games & prizes, meeting and greeting , and refreshments
  • Friendship Volunteers in which we sit around a big table and put together newsletters, mailings, etc for Pgh charities. (Person one hands page one to person two who adds page two, and so on. We have put together huge amounts of items that have saved these charities a great deal of expense while having fun chatting with one another.
  • Lunch Bunch in which we dine out at inexpensive restaurants while enjoying friendship and conversation
  • (Each person is responsible for his or her own bill)
  • Men’s Group in which there is guy talk, sharing of blind issues, and events
  • Knitting and Crocheting. No experience or eyesight is necessary to learn to make lovely handmade items for self, others, or donate to charities
  • “Yes I Can” which is a topic led support group with suggestions for enhancing life happiness
  • Talking Book Discussion Group in which the members select their favorite books to read and discuss
  • Mall Walking with a private guide and meet-up for coffee at the end (Coming soon)

The group is run 100% by amazing volunteers who help with programs, transportation and simple administrative tasks. No experience with blindness or vision impairments is necessary. Volunteers are the heart of the program since they provide the human caring that encourages members.Call Dr. Andrea Schwartz at 724.444.0064 for more information about volunteering or joining the group.
